Monthly update for June 2019
June 2019
Hi there!
This is the 21th full month that I worked on Listen Notes full-time.
You can read past issues of this monthly update.
Product updates
1. Tons of infrastructure improvements: upgraded most of servers to beefy EC2 instances to support the growth, database backup improvement...
2. Some improvements on the auto transcription service: adding punctuations, adding transcripts tab to the profile page...
3. Added Listen Later notes to the community tab.
4. Work in progress: a couple podcast research tools.
Company updates
Nothing new :)
Well, some thoughts: Building an online service doesn't have a clear finish line. It's an ongoing effort. Sometimes you add new product features, which users can understand & appreciate. But most of time you just try to do anything to keep the service up and running 24/7, which is not very obvious to most people. It sounds simple, but simple doesn't mean easy. As you get more users, you'll face many issues (e.g., strange bugs, traffic surge, service outage, spammers and other bad actors...) that consume your time & energy. This tweet says it well:
Note: "@kevin" in the tweet is Kevin Systrom, cofounder of Instagram, which you may hear of...
Some numbers
Database: 720k podcasts; 48 million episodes
